Attack of the Phobia

No matter how trivial or irrational it may seem to others, in the grip of fear you can feel paralysed, completely helpless, even by a small spider or the thought of going in a lift. In moderation, these phobias do little more than inconvenience you, but for a lot of people with phobias, simply being in the presence of something they fear causes:

• Irrational behaviour (climbing furniture or leaving rooms in order to avoid contact)
• Hyperventilation
• Sweating
• Nausea
• Inability to go about everyday tasks until the things they fear are no longer nearby.

As much as you might be able to put up with being phobic, and perhaps even laugh about it when you’re sure the things that trigger fear aren’t around, logically, why should fear of an object, an animal or a situation have power over you? Wouldn’t it be easier if you could go anywhere you wanted and do anything you pleased without having to check that there’s nothing to throw you into panic?

Why do I get so frightened?

In the back of your mind, you know that you’re bigger than the spider, that the clown is just a person like any other, and that nothing untoward will happen when it gets dark, so you might wonder why you have phobias in the first place. Most phobias begin as a healthy dislike, and then become amplified because of factors such as stress, negative childhood associations. Once anxiety enters the equation, your brain will respond by activating the ‘fight or flight response’ that it uses when you’re in danger, not realising that although the phobia scares you, it cannot hurt you.

Regain Total Control

Just over ten per cent of adults will develop a phobia at some point, so although you may be embarrassed by it, it’s not as uncommon as you may think, Phobias can be treated by convincing the brain that they are no reason to panic. A hypnotic trance takes you too a calm place, where inner anxieties can be tackled without triggering a negative reaction from the brain. People who’ve had phobia hypnotherapy often find that they feel:

• Perfectly comfortable with that which they once feared
• More confident in unfamiliar surroundings
• More spontaneous

"I don’t fear communicating with colleagues or bosses"

I had a challenge with being able to communicate for previous years and it became so bad that during conference calls at work I would get sweaty palms and felt, actually I don’t think I can talk about what I need to discuss, because it will be wrong anyway (a mini anxiety attack)! So,  I was stumbling as I was speaking and when I paused, it felt like a 1000 years had gone by.

I contacted Maria and the first session was definitely an immediate impact and as the weeks/sessions (6) went by,  all of the symptoms mentioned above started to go away to the point of never returning.

It has been nearly a year now since we had our first session and I can honestly say,  the best investment of my life. I don’t fear communicating with colleagues or bosses and I just say what I feel in a pragmatic and logical way. Not stumbling on my words and when I pause,  I do it intentionally as a communication tool. I am really grateful and extremely happy right now. I would really recommend anyone to just give it a try.

Thank you Maria!
