Parenthood is generally perceived as nature’s blessing, as a vocation that is gratifying and full of warmth and love. Yet what if you just can’t feel that way? What if you’re terrified, tearful or even apathetic? You’re not alone. Especially as the birth of a child draws near, many expectant parents feel apprehensive that they may not be perfect parents, or that they may not be able to provide for their child as well as they might like. While this is a perfectly natural fear, it is generally an irrational one based on overwhelming emotions and (for the mother-to-be) hormonal changes in the brain.

No, certainly not. According to NHS statistics, about one in seven mothers suffer from post-natal anxiety in the first three to six months after having a child, while one in ten fathers suffer from post-partum anxiety within the same timeframe. With the right support and treatment, they recover quickly, without any long-term effects on parents or child. Symptoms of post-natal depression include:

• Crying more frequently for weeks after your child is born
• Agitation whenever the baby is around
• Feelings of helplessness and self-loathing
• Inability to bond with the new baby,
• Increased use of alcohol or recreational substances
• Overworking
• Low mood or onset of suicidal thoughts

Reasons for anxiety after childbirth include:

• Being quickly overwhelmed with unfamiliar/more responsibilities
• Financial strain
• A history of depression within your family

Relationships and removing limiting beliefs about money

I cannot put into words what a difference this has made to my life. I was feeling extremely anxious and the therapy that Maria has given me has helped tremendously.
